ArchivalResource

Facer family papers, 1885-1952.

Collection contains materials related to Joseph Facer's two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southern States Mission (1897-1899) and as a missionary for the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association (YMMIA, 1901-1902, mostly in St. Joseph, Arizona). The collection also includes farm accounting ledgers of Joseph's father George Facer (1834-1903), missionary reference books, papers, certificates, licences, and the correspondence of Joseph Facer. Facer's first mission records include mimeograph-like circular letters from the mission headquarters and original hymn lyrics based on existing hymns and popular music written by Facer and his fellow missionaries The published reference books were retained in this manuscript collection because of their collective artifactual value, representing the kind of reference works carried by a Mormon missionary at the turn of the 20th century. As a YMMIA missionary, Joseph Facer assisted in the organizational development of Mormon Church branches and worked with local Navajo Mormon Church members. The collection also includes three autograph books belonging to Joseph and Emma Richards Facer, and two boxes of family books, including the Facer family Bible.

5 boxes (2.25 linear ft.)1 microfilm reel.
